The mountain has real capacity now

Jebel Akhdar is no longer somewhere you can only look at and leave. Oman's Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, quoted in April 2026, counted 51 hotel establishments in the wilayat offering roughly 1,028 rooms, with visitor numbers up around 10 percent in 2025. That range runs from international luxury resorts on the canyon rim down to small guesthouses and farm stays in the villages. Two of the best-known properties sit at around 2,000 m, and others on the plateau have opened alongside them.

What a night up there buys you

The plateau's best hours are exactly the ones a day tour cannot reach. Light on the terraces at dawn and dusk is the difference between a nice view and the reason people come back; the rose harvest happens before sunrise; and the temperature at 2,000 m makes an evening outdoors pleasant in months when the coast is not. Staying also converts the mountain from a viewpoint into a walking destination, since the fuller village circuits and an unhurried Wadi Bani Habib need hours a day trip does not have. And you drive the hairpins twice rather than four times.

What a day trip costs you

The plain accounting is four to five hours in a vehicle in exchange for three to four hours on the mountain. For plenty of travellers that is a fair trade, particularly on a short Oman trip where Muscat, the coast and the desert are all competing for the same days. It also removes real friction: no 4x4 hire, no checkpoint to negotiate, no descending a ten percent gradient in an unfamiliar car. What you are buying is a comprehensive look at the plateau in a single go. What you are giving up is time of day, which on this mountain is most of the magic.

The clusters, and where they sit

The plateau properties cluster around the rim near Saiq, which puts the canyon views and the main villages within a short drive of one another. Diana's Point, the mountain's best-known viewpoint — named for the Princess of Wales, who visited Oman in 1986 — sits by one of the resorts; visitors report the viewpoint itself can be reached without being a hotel guest, though that reads as a courtesy rather than a published right, so ask at the gate. Beyond the resorts, smaller guesthouses and farm stays in and around the villages are the cheaper and more local option.

Nizwa as the middle option

Nizwa is the pragmatic compromise. It sits roughly 45 minutes from the plateau, offers a much wider range of prices, and puts the fort, the souq and the Friday livestock market on your doorstep, plus a shorter run to Jebel Shams if you want both mountains. You will still need a 4x4 to get up Jebel Akhdar from there, so it solves the driving-time problem rather than the vehicle one. It also breaks the long return leg: finishing a mountain day in Nizwa instead of pushing on to the coast turns a ten-hour day into a relaxed one.

Booking notes

Two periods squeeze the mountain. April, when the roses draw domestic and international visitors at the same time, and the summer months, when Omani families come up to escape the coastal heat. Either can leave the plateau full while Muscat still has rooms to spare, so book earlier than the international season would suggest. Confirm before committing that your property can accommodate how you are arriving, because a resort will expect a 4x4 at the checkpoint and several arrange transfers for guests without one. Check heating in winter.
